Here is my breakdown for Beyond Extent's "Kingdom Below", a 5-week Environment Challenge. In this challenge, 5 artists are paired together to create an Environment that matches the "Kingdom Below" theme in just 5 weeks. For this challenge, I was responsible for creating the blockout composition, lighting, organic modeling, some material creation, vegetation, the crystals, and leading the team for this project. My responsibility as the lead on this team was to ensure everyone was following the same art style we all chose, as well as helping out where needed with tasks or providing critique, in addition to the team mentor's weekly feedback. This was such a cool experience, and the biggest challenge for me was definitely speed sculpting and working with materials.
For the rock materials, I used a combination of sculpting in ZBrush, taking the sculpt information, and ingesting it into Substance Designer to add pores, cracks, and other imperfections.
In Unreal Engine, I created master materials with parameters, which allowed me and my teammates to create material instances and alter things like the base color, slope information, normal intensity, swapping out texture maps, altering each RGB channel, and more. This made it easier for us to get this project done as quickly as possible due to the challenge's time constraint.
Thank you to my wonderful teammates who made this experience fun and productive. Everyone on the team had awesome skills that they brought to this project.
